Sound Work
“No Todo Lo Que Brilla Es Oro” A two part sound piece representing an experience in the Infierno region of the Peruvian Amazon: meant to be listened in tandem with one another. One track represents nature and one part represents the human presence of space in nature.
The recordings are a singular composition of sounds, samples, conversations and field recordings of nature-environmental sounds (field recordings of birds, bugs, bees, rain, storms, etc) and human-generated sounds (machinery, conversation, banging on oil drums, etc). The composition is divided into two sculptural elements consisting of the hanging shell of the copoazú fruit (one with a whole in it---made naturally, by an animal seeking the contents of it’s fruit) and the half shell of a copazú fruit, cut in half by human means. The pedestal used to center the piece was made from a local tree, which had fallen in a storm and been cut into pieces, that worked as a pedestal.
The recordings also relate to the two shells: with natural sounds emanating from the whole shell (intervened by an animal) and human sounds emanating from the cut, halfshell. Each shell contained a speaker (not visible to the audience) which emanated the relating sounds of the composition (natural and human made sounds).
